Starting School: A Guide for Parents, a publication designed to assist families with children starting preschool and kindergarten in ACT public schools. Through ACT public schools the ACT Government is committed to ensuring every child can develop to their full potential. When your child starts at an ACT public school, you can be sure they will have access to the best public education system all the way through to Year 12.

This booklet provides useful advice and practical tips to help you prepare your child for preschool and for those first weeks in kindergarten. It also provides contact details should you require more information.


New Harrison School secondary component

New Schools for Gungahlin - Harrison School Senior Site and Gungahlin College

Gungahlin College
The $72.4 million Gungahlin College will cater for 900 students in Years 11 and 12 from 2011.

The project includes a secondary college, Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) learning centre and a joint college and community library.
The College is scheduled for completion in December 2010 with classes commencing in the first term of 2011 for Year 11 students. The CIT and library are due for completion in early 2011.

Harrison Senior Site
The Government had originally planned to complete the new high school in time for the 2013 school year, however due to the huge success and high enrolments at Harrison School and the population growth in the area, the Government has brought the project forward. Construction of the $45 million secondary school is programmed to begin in April 2010 and scheduled to open from the start of the 2012 school year.


Council of Australian Governments (COAG) committed to a comprehensive education reform agenda for Australia

ACT Implementation of National Education Reform

In 2008, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) committed to a comprehensive education reform agenda for Australia. To facilitate this agenda, National Partnership agreements were developed to fund specific projects and deliver on nationally-significant reforms.

National Partnership agreements mark the beginning of a new way in which government and non-government schools and the ACT and the Australian Governments will work together to deliver better outcomes for students.

National Partnership agreements are joint initiatives of the Australian Government, the ACT Government, the ACT Catholic Education Office and ACT Association of Independent Schools.

The National Partnerships focus on the following areas of priority: Building the Education Revolution; Literacy and Numeracy; Low Socio-economic Status School Communities; Teacher Quality; Digital Education Revolution; Early Childhood Reform; Productivity Places Program; Youth Transitions and Attainment; and Trade Training Centres
