Bulk site excavation work is underway, levelling and preparing the site for the digging of the footings. The topsoil has been removed and stockpiled and will be used in landscaping the site when the building has been completed.

  • 21 Jun 2010 - Gold Creek School P21

Bulk excavation work has been completed. The site has been levelled ready for work to begin on the contstruction of footings for the building.

  • 25 Jun 2010 - Gold Creek School P21

Preliminary work on the building's footings is taking place, and excavation for an in-ground water tank to supply the toilets and irrigation is also underway. This is one of the environmentally sustainable features of the new school, which has been designed to achieve a six-star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

The inground water tank has been completed, and the footing for the new building has been poured. The footing has a layer of insulating foam around its perimeter to help prevent heat loss from the building in winter. The next stage will be the construction of the slab.

  • 13 Jul 2010 - Gold Creek School P21

Brickwork for the slab will commence this week subject to the weather being fine enough.

  • 27 Jul 2010 - Gold Creek School P21

The slab for the new building has been poured, and requires a period of curing in order to attain maximum structural strength.

  • 08 Aug 2010 - Gold Creek School P21

With the slab poured and curing, hydraulic work is being undertaken around the site. Recent rains have not significantly delayed progress and the erection of the steel frame will be the next stage of construction.

  • 25 Aug 2010 - Gold Creek School P21

Further rain and a delay in the fabrication of structural steel components have slowed work on the building; however structural steel has begun arriving on site today and work on constructing the frame can now proceed.

Framing and blockwork of the new environmental learning centre are underway. The centre is the first in the Southern Hemisphere to register for the International Living Building Challenge which promotes sustainable design and construction practices around the globe. It aims to achieve a six Green Star environmental rating and will incorporate an array of passive heating and cooling features as well as using a large proportion of recycled materials in the construction of the building.

Work is continuing on the construction of the external walls, and foil insulation has been applied to the framework of the thermal chimney in preparation for further work on it. The next stage will be the laying of roof insulation and the installation of roof sheeting.
