Canberra – living in the national capital
Canberra offers a fantastic lifestyle for you and your family. Apart from our outstanding public school system Canberra offers excellent health services, shorter commuting times, plenty of fresh air and community living. Much of what is best about Australia can be found in the nation's capital - it's a clean, safe and relaxed place to live.
Canberra has all the lifestyle amenities, city services and events of a world-class capital, yet the bush is on our doorstep and Sydney, the snowfields and south coast beaches are within easy reach.
Canberra’s public schooling system has long set the national standard for providing high quality education. Underpinning this success is investment from the ACT Government through the Department of Education and Training in our schools – and in our teachers and their ongoing professional development.
Range of schooling models
Our schooling models offer students, parents and teachers a broad range of education options and learning pathways choices.
Preschools have been integrated within our primary schools and a commitment to early years learning has seen the establishment of four new early childhood schools, offering services to children from birth to eight years.
A range of preschool to year 10 schools provide a seamless learning transition from early childhood to middle years. Our high schools and colleges provide a range of innovative pathways to higher education, further training and vocational options including school-based apprenticeships and guaranteed entry to the Canberra Institute of Technology for students who successfully undertake vocational courses.
The ACT’s Year 11-12 college system sets a national standard in senior secondary education and includes tertiary pre-entry curriculum from our two major universities, the Australian National University and the University of Canberra.
Commitment to teaching excellence
We hold great store in quality teaching. We recognise that excellence in teaching is the single most powerful influence on student achievement. If the learning achievements of students are to be enhanced, then the knowledge, skills, experience and professional value of teachers have to be recognised, prioritised and supported.
ACT public schools value teacher professional learning. The Teachers Professional Learning Fund supports teacher access to high quality professional learning activities through a centrally located Centre for Teaching and Learning. The Department is committed to providing an environment for teachers that will increasingly support them in focusing on the core business of teaching and learning.
The ACT has a contemporary curriculum framework for all P-10 schools, with our public schools able to adapt and tailor curriculum appropriate to the needs of their school community.
The ACT Government has made public education a major funding priority with significant levels of funding provided to a number of key initiatives. Specific integrated ICT programs support the provision of high-speed broadband to every public school and technologies to support learning. Interactive whiteboards and wireless lap top computers are just two examples. Other key support programs include Indigenous education, physical education, languages and greater support for students with disability.
ACT public school facilities and infrastructure are of very high quality and significant funding in recent years has allowed every school to upgrade classrooms, improve sporting and arts facilities as well as playgrounds.
Canberra offers a fresh start in more ways than one. Ours is a beautiful city of wide open spaces, fresh air, community living and a more relaxed way of life.
