Children must be four years of age on or before 30 April to enrol in a preschool program. Children who are enrolling in an ACT public primary school for the first time at Kindergarten must be five years of age on or before 30 April.
The ACT Government provides preschool education for children in the year before they attend school. Children must turn four on or before 30 April to be eligible to attend. Sessions are either in a long day configuration (2 x 6 hour days) or a short day configuration (3 x 4 hour days). Not all preschool sites offer both types of programs.

All ACT Government preschools provide a play-based learning environment with a focus on the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of the individual student. In the preschool year, the development of literacy and numeracy skills and concepts occurs through play-based experience.
