Introduction
ACT's non-government school sector consists of schools from a range of different education and religious philosophies. The variety of schools in the sector reflects the diversity of the community in the ACT and the preferences of parents for a particular style of education for their children.
The non-government sector is committed to:
- Developing the spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual welfare of its students
- Innovation, diversity and choice
- Maximising student outcomes
- Teacher, parent and student participation in all aspects of school education
- Promoting the partnership between home and school, and
- Preparing students for their full participation in all aspects of democratic society

Responsibilities
- Registration of non-government schools in the ACT in accordance with relevant legislation
- Administration of legislation relevant to ACT non-government schools
- Administration of Commonwealth and Territorial programs of financial support to ACT non-government schools
- Preparation of advice to executive and government on issues relating to non-government schools
- Secretariat support for Ministerial advisory body on non-government schools in the ACT
- Management of the annual census of enrolment of non-government schools
- Reporting on the functions of the section, programs and initiatives in non-government schools as appropriate
