The Manual for Registration of Non-Government Schools in the Australian Capital Territory
(3mb) provides guidance on compliance and registration procedures for prospective, current and expanding non-government schools in the ACT in accordance with the Education Act 2004. ![]()
Registration
It is not lawful to operate a school, or to commence educating a child at any educational level unless the school is registered or provisionally registered to do so.
The Manual for Registration of Non-Government Schools in the Australian Capital Territory
(3.81mb) is to be read in conjunction with the Education Act 2004.
Compliance
All schools have a legal obligation to comply with the Education Act 2004. Compliance is the legislated responsibility of schools, proprietors, principals and all staff.
A two part compliance management procedure consisting of annual compliance self audit and a confirmation of compliance check is to be implemented by the Department.

Policies
The main legislation for the operation of non-government schools in the ACT is the Education Act 2004
which commenced on 1 January 2005.
