Teaching and Learning

Rules of the Challenge

  1. The Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge is open to all ACT students who are in Years P to 8. This includes students in Public and Non-Government schools and those that are home schooled
  2. The challenge is to read 12 books in one year. At least 8 of the books read must be listed on the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge Booklist. The remaining 4 must be of a similar standard to the books on the list and must be checked by a teacher or librarian. Students in Preschool, Kindergarten and Years 1 and 2 can list books that are read to them, they do not have to read the books themselves. Students from other year levels can choose all 12 books from the booklist.
  3. The reading year begins in Term 1 and finishes on 8 September. Books read prior to Term 1 will not be counted. Schools need to complete the school reading record summary by 16 September 2011.
  4. Students can read from the booklist for their year level or the level above unless there are extenuating circumstances eg. a special school student, a student with learning difficulties or very gifted students.  Under these circumstances, it is imperative that parents/carers, teachers and librarians guide students in their choice of books.
  5. Students must remember to neatly record the title of each book, on their Student Reading Record MS Word Document (40kb). Each entry must be signed by a teacher, parent or caregiver to indicate the student has read or shared in the reading of the book and that the title is correct.
  6. Schools intending to participate in the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge will nominate a school contact person who will register the school in the Challenge. In order to register please use the School Registration Form MS Word Document (33kb) and email, or fax it to the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge, Literacy and Numeracy Team on (02) 6205 9340, or mail it to PO Box 158, Canberra ACT 2601.
