Studies of Asia

Studies of Asia is an integrated approach to Asia education enabling students to engage with learning about the culture, language, geography, history and contemporary issues of Asian nations.
The Studies of Asia Program in the ACT focuses on policy development and the delivery of professional development across all sectors of schooling. Studies of Asia is supported by a strong network of school based coordinators who plan activities and develop resources for teaching staff in the Studies of Asia across the curriculum.  They are assisted by the Curriculum Executive Officer of the Curriculum Support Section of the ACT Department of Education who is available to visit schools and offer on site advice and support.
The ACT Studies of Asia program is supported by the Asia Education Foundation (AEF) External Link. The AEF works with public and non-government schools, and institutions, philanthropic foundations and the corporate sector to:

  • promote and support the study of Asia across all curriculum areas in Australian schools through teacher education and the development of resources.
  • educate the broader community about the importance of school students undertaking Studies of Asia.

The AEF ensures that information about curriculum initiatives related to Studies of Asia is widely disseminated to the broader education community through newsletters, journals, conferences and subject / teacher professional associations.
Policy
The national policy statement Engaging Young Australians with Asia External Linkin Australian Schools was published in 2006. The Statement identifies the broad knowledge, understandings, values and skills required to engage with Asia in the context of existing policies and practices in teaching and learning. It is based on the understanding that, across all learning areas, studies of Asia and Australia will achieve a status comparable with other studies traditionally included in the curriculum.
Engaging Young Australians with Asia has been prepared by the Asia Education Foundation (AEF) and builds on Studies of Asia: A Statement for Australian Schools (Second Edition, 2000). It reflects the significant work undertaken by all education jurisdictions and schools across Australia in integrating the study of Asia across learning areas.
The Access Asia Advisory Committee provides overall leadership and has representatives from government, independent and Catholic sectors as well as a principal and curriculum officers. The committee’s aim is to broaden the reach of the program in the ACT.  It meets regularly to exchange ideas and to plan local professional learning activities.
