Early Literacy and Numeracy Officers (ELNOs)

The Early Literacy and Numeracy Officer (ELNO) Program is a Learning Assistance Program initiative that brings together the early childhood teachers (K-2/3) in a school as a professional learning team with the goal of improving literacy and numeracy learning outcomes for the range of students in their classes by building teacher capacity.

At some stage in the year, an ELNO is placed in the school for a set period of time to work intensively with the Early Childhood Team on the process of collaborative professional development. During this time the ELNO conducts weekly workshops with the Early Childhood Team on an agreed focus to develop shared understandings. They work alongside teachers in their classes, affirming effective practices, modelling teaching approaches, observing teaching interactions and helping teachers implement practices discussed in team workshops. Teachers are supported to work on theory and practice in collaborative ways, developing their understandings and practical expertise.

The ELNO Program uses two models that support planning and implementing a balanced approach to the teaching of literacy and numeracy. The models used are the Balanced Literacy Program and the Balanced Numeracy Program.
