Numeracy

The term numeracy is commonly used nationally in at least two distinct ways:

  • Doing Mathematics Well
  • Dealing With the Mathematics Needed to do Some Other Job Well.

These two things overlap but are not the same, but both are important for our students.

"To be numerate is to use mathematics effectively to meet the general demands of life at home, in paid work, and for participation in community and civic life.

In school education, numeracy is a fundamental component of learning, discourse and critique across all areas of the curriculum. It involves the disposition to use, in context, a combination of:

  • Underpinning Mathematical Concepts and Skills From Across the Discipline (numerical, spatial, graphical, statistical and algebraic)
  • Mathematical Thinking and Context
  • General Thinking Skills, and
  • Grounded Appreciation of Context. "

Professional Development to Support Numeracy

The Literacy and Numeracy Section provide support materials and courses for teachers in ACT schools.  Definitions and examples for the different approaches are given as a guide for your information and to use when programming.
While information provided in the booklets describe the frameworks of the programs, it should be stressed that engaging in specific professional development, dialogue and receiving on-going support is essential to embed these approaches. The Literacy and Numeracy Section offer specific professional learning workshops that address these programs. Information on these workshops can also be found on the Professional Learning and Events Calendar on ‘Activated’ or by contacting the Literacy and Numeracy Section on (02) 6205 2045.
