What is it?
The Parents as Tutors Program at the Schools and Community Centre is a joint DET and University of Canberra program. This research-based program provides parents with training to help them assist their child to develop literacy skills.
Who is it for?
The program is available to assist families with children in years 3 – 10 who are experiencing significant literacy difficulties. Families are referred to the program by the school counsellor.
Program Information
There are two intakes into the program each year. Initially, parents attend eight two hour sessions. They are provided with a range of strategies to help them work with their child. Following the eight sessions parents bring their child for twelve one hour sessions known as the Individual Assistance Program (IAP). At these sessions a tutor ensures that the parent can work successfully with their child on literacy strategies. In most cases, the twelve individual Assistance sessions provide enough support for the family to continue working at home independently. Extra sessions are available if required.
Arrangements for joining the program
A counsellor’s referral form is completed and forwarded to the Centre. This contains information from parents, class teacher, school counsellor and other specialised staff who have had contact with the child. The form is then forwarded to the Centre where the family is placed on the waiting list and the family will be notified when a place becomes available.
