Education and Training Professional Learning Policy

The Directorate's Professional Learning Policy was revised and re-published in 2009. The policy provides information on requirements and principles relating to professional learning. For staff members in the Directorate, the related Professional Learning Guidelines are available on the Index Intranet.

Centre for Teaching and Learning

The Hedley Beare Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is the Department's principal venue for professional learning delivery, including workshops, seminars and conferences. For more information, visit the CTL page.

Professional Learning Fund

The Professional Learning Section administers professional learning funds on behalf of the Education and Training Directorate. Under the ACT DET Teaching Staff Enterprise Agreement 2009 – 2011, the Professional Learning Fund provides professional learning support for teachers and principals through:

Leadership Development

The Education and Training School Leadership Framework was launched on 4 September 2008. The framework informs the provision of leadership development programs including:

  • Emerging Leaders' Program
  • Principals’ Development Program
  • ImpACT (Incident Management Program for the ACT)

Induction for New Staff Members

Induction is provided for new teaching and administrative staff members. Generally, induction days are conducted at the end of January and in mid-July. New staff members are contacted to organise registration and to provide them with details of the venues and dates.

New Educator Support Program (NESP)

A New Educator is defined as a classroom teacher in the first three years of professional practice. As part of The New Educator Support Program PDF File (784 kb) in 2011, there is a workshop program organised by sector, with separate days in terms 1-3 for P-2, 3-6 and secondary teachers and days in Term 4 for primary and secondary teachers to target the needs of teachers working with each age group.

Workshop themes are:

  • Term 1 – Professional Relationships, Australian Curriculum (CTL)
  • Term 2 – Essential Skills for Teachers (CTL)
  • Term 3 – Pedagogy, Curriculum & Assessment, Literacy & Numeracy through Technology (CTL)
  • Term 4 – Reflection and the Way Forward (Birrigai).

There is no charge for NESP workshops. The cost is met through budget provision.

In association with NESP, Mentors PDF File (325kb) will work with new educators in 2011. There is training in 2011 with experienced presenter Louise Bywaters for New Educator mentors PDF File (82kb) to build the capacity of mentors to support new educators in their day-to-day practice.

Career Development for Administrative and School Support Staff

The Career Development Program addresses training needs of administrative staff members, particularly those in schools, including:school business managers, building service officers, front office clerical and reception staff, learning support assistants, general and specialist assistants and school information technology officers.
