Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme 2006 - 2009

The Australian Government is committed to supporting and developing teachers' skills in key priority areas. The Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme External Link (AGQTP) is one element in the Teachers for the 21st Century: Making a Difference initiative. The AGQTP includes state and territory projects as well as strategic national projects. It is recognition that education of the highest quality is the foundation of all our futures and requires teachers of the highest quality.

In supporting the teachers' complex and professionally demanding charter to improve the educational outcomes for students, the programme provides opportunities for ongoing and targeted professional development to meet school and individual needs under the states/territories category of projects.

Programme Objectives
The objectives of the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme are to:

  • Equip teachers with the skills and knowledge needed for teaching in the 21st Century.
  • Provide national leadership in high priority areas of teacher professional learning need.
  • Improve the professional standing of school teachers and leaders.

Partnerships
The Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme has established strong partnerships with the higher education sector and professional associations in the ACT. The associations and universities are represented on the Cross-sectoral Committee and relevant bodies are consulted in the development of the Activity Plan. Involvement of universities includes academic partnerships and providers of specialist professional learning.

AGQTP Priority Areas
Activities under the state and territory teacher professional learning projects must address one or more of various specified priority areas. The key priority area of the 2006 – 2009 ACT Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme is ‘Cross Curricular/Whole School’, with the following elements to be addressed:

  • general pedagogy
  • whole-school innovative teaching approaches, and
  • the innovative use of ICT across the curriculum.

A range of activities are developed each year of the Programme, emphasising the priority area, and its elements, through improving pedagogical content knowledge, better engagement of students in learning and providing improved student learning outcomes.

The 2008 ACT AGQTP programme of activities are to focus on:

College Science Teachers as part of the four-year ‘Teaching and Learning in Colleges’ programme; and
Teachers P-10, in the implementation of the new Curriculum Framework through the ‘Assessment for Learning’ programme

In 2008, two additional projects will run as part of the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme.  These are the ‘Consumer and Financial Literacy Education Package’ and the ‘Australian Government Summer Schools Small Grants’. These will both operate across P-10 classes.
