An Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASBA) involves the employment of a young person who is undertaking a traineeship part-time while still attending school or college and enrolled in a program leading to a senior secondary certificate.

The duration of an Australian School-based Apprenticeship is 18-24 months with a minimum on-job-training of one working day per week and a minimum of three hours off-job-training per week at an Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

ASBAs were previously known as School-based New Apprenticeships (SNAPs).

ASBA Online

Throughout 2006 work was undertaken to review the administration processes involved with ASBAs. One of the more significant changes being pursued is the movement to an on-line system for the Principal endorsement process. The system has been designed and a process of information sharing and training has being developed to ensure that everyone involved with the process is fully aware of the change and is equipped to operate with the new system once it is introduced. Details of the opportunities to learn about ASBA OnLine are available in the attached documents.

All Principals and VET Coordinators will be able to learn about the way ASBA OnLine will work through these sessions.
The whole of system trial of ASBA OnLine commenced in semester two 2007.
