Industry and Community Consultation
The ACT Department of Education and Training has comprehensive communication networks with all major VET clients and stakeholders. The Department gathers advice from industry, the community and VET industry stakeholders utilising a range of strategies to inform the development and implementation of client focussed policy and programs.
Some of the sources of regular information and consultation are:

- Vocational Education and Training Advisory Group (VETAG)
- ACT Industry Training Advisory Body Network Consortium
- Industry and Community Forums
- Community Education Advisory Group
- Committees, reference groups and working parties
- ACT Skills Commission
The outcomes of these consultations are used in the development of strategic and business plans, projects, funding guidelines and research documents including the Annual Vocational Education and Training Priorities.
Annual VET Consultation Forum
Let’s Talk VET
Training & Tertiary Education’s annual VET consultation forum is an opportunity for participants to network, share their experiences and concerns and learn from each other as well as providing the Department with a great opportunity to consult with its stakeholders.
The inaugural ‘Let’s Talk VET’ was held in November 2007.
Let’s Talk VET 2008 will be held on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th April 2008 at the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Fremantle Drive Stirling.Vocational Education and Training Advisory Group (VETAG)
The Vocational Education and Training Advisory Group (VETAG) is a high level advisory group established to give strategic advice to the Chief Executive of the Department of Education and Training on VET priorities and strategies.
ACT Industry Training Advisory Body Network Consortium
The ACT Department of Education and Training has contracted the ACT Industry Training Advisory Body Network Consortium (the Consortium) to provide technical industry advice and support in a range of areas including:
- vocational education and training (VET) needs and the future directions of VET in the Territory
- development and implementation of national Training Packages in the ACT
- formulating industry priorities to meet and inform ACT Government and Australian Government targets
- determining public funding prices for specific qualifications in line with determined priorities
- promoting Australian Apprenticeships
- conducting consultations with VET stakeholders
- preparing reports on outcomes arising from consultation meetings and forums for the Vocational Education and Training Advisory Group (VETAG)
The consortium members include the chairs or senior officers of ACT Industry Training Advisory Boards. The Industry Training Advisory Boards work with their respective industries and national bodies to provide advice to the Territory and to VETAG.
Industry and Community Forums
The ACT Industry Training Advisory Body Network Consortium conducts two public Industry forums each year – a planning forum in March and a validation forum in August. In addition to industry engagement, regular forums including other stakeholder groups are conducted to enable direct engagement with clients, including students. Community Education Advisory Group
The Community Education Advisory Group (CEAG) is an advisory group established to give strategic advice to the Director, Training and Tertiary Education, of the Department of Education and Training quality and informed advice on community education matters.
Committees, reference groups and working parties
Officers of the Department convene and/or participate in a number of local and national committees, reference groups and working parties to ensure a good understanding of the issues facing our stakeholders are incorporated into the advisory and planning processes of the Department. Examples of some of these groups are:
- Interagency Transition Committee for People with a Disability,
- Board of Senior Secondary Studies,
- ACT Accreditation and Registration Council,
- Australian School Based Apprenticeships (ASBA) Reference Group
- National User Choice network group
- YARDS (Youth at Risk Developing Skills) steering committee
- ACT Flexible Learning Framework coordination group
ACT Skills Commission
The ACT Skills Commission was established by the Chief Minister in November 2006 and provides high level, strategic advice to the ACT Government on skills issues.
